Millikan, Robert A.

1940 TLS from the Caltech Nobel physics laureate thanking a noted astronomer for his new book

Price: $225.00

Description:
(1868-1953) American experimental physicist, awarded 1923 Nobel Prize for the measurement of the elementary electric charge and for his work on the photoelectric effect. At the University of Chicago in 1909 he began a series of experiments to determine the electric charge carried by a single electron, measuring the course of charged water droplets in an electric field. The results suggested that the charge on the droplets is a multiple of the elementary electric charge, but the experiment was not accurate enough to be convincing. He obtained more precise results in 1910 with his famous oil-drop experiment in which he replaced water (which evaporated too quickly) with oil. In 1914 Millikan took up with similar skill the experimental verification of the equation introduced by Einstein in 1905 to describe the photoelectric effect. He used this same research to obtain an accurate value of Planck's constant. In 1921 Millikan became director of the Norman Bridge Laboratory of Physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena where he undertook a major study of the radiation that physicist Victor Hess had detected coming from outer space. Millikan proved that this radiation is of extraterrestrial origin, and he named it "cosmic rays"." As chairman of the Caltech Executive Council (the school's governing body at the time) from 1921 until his 1945 retirement, he helped turn the school into one of the leading research institutions in the US. TLS "R.A. Millikan" on 8 3/4 x 6 Caltech letterhead, Pasadena, California, May 24 1940, to Dr. G. Stromberg, Mt. Wilson Observatory, Pasadena. Millikan thanks Stromberg for the inscribed copy of his new book "The Soul of the Universe." Millikan will get a lot of pleasure and education from it, his brother having spoken about it a few weeks before Milliken knew Stromberg had written it.
