(1751-1829) Colonel on Washington’s staff at Yorktown 1781, New Hampshire US Rep 1793-97. As Secretary of War 1801-09, ordered erection of fort at “Chikago” 1803. Replaced Benjamin Lincoln as Collector of the Port of Boston, serving March 1809-January 1812. Named Senior Major General US Army and commanded northern border 1812-13, recalled for mismanagement of campaign. In command at NY 1813-15. Minister to Portugal 1822-24. Dearborn, Michigan named for him. Printed 10 x 8 circular letter addressed by Dearborn while Boston Port Collector, August 25 1809, to Nicholas Tilinghast (actually, "Tillinghast") of Taunton, Mass. Dearborn seeks information on manufacturers and manufacturing in the State to be passed to the Secretary of the Treasury for a report directed by a resolution of Congress. Dearborn requests whatever information can be provided "in relation to the manufactories with which you [Tillinghast] are best acquainted, or within your immediate vicinity..." With integral address leaf. NICHOLAS TILLINGHAST ((1767-1818), Taunton, Mass. lawyer, served on Mass. General Court several times between 1795 and 1816. Taunton Postmaster 1797-1803, 1804 & 1806 unsuccessful Federalist candidate for Congress, elected Clerk of Mass. State House 1803.
