(1869-1943) Page of Honor to Queen Victoria, Conservative MP 1900-06 & 1910-18 (Northamptonshire South), 1918-43 (Daventry). Served in WW I (while MP), wounded at Ypres. Speaker of the House of Commons 1928-43. ALS “E. A. Fitzroy” on 7 x 4 ˝ white embossed Speaker’s House S.W.1 letterhead, London, March 8 1937, 2pp (1 sheet), to Mrs. (Pauline) Spender-Clay, sending sympathy on the death of her husband, whom Fitzroy knew from their association in the House of Commons. PAULINE ASTOR (1880-1972) brother of 2nd Viscount Astor, m. Lt. Col. Rt. Hon. Herbert “Bertie” Spender-Clay (1875-1937) in 1904. Her portrait was painted in 1898 by John Singer Sargent. Their daughter Rachel married David Bowes-Lyon, brother of Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. PAULINE ASTOR (1880-1972), brother of 2nd Viscount Astor, m. Lt. Col. Rt. Hon. Herbert “Bertie” Spender-Clay (1875-1937) in 1904. Her portrait was painted in 1898 by John Singer Sargent. Her daughter Rachel married David Bowes-Lyon, brother of Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. She was therefore the great-aunt of Queen Elizabeth II.
