(1885-1963) French Radical Socialist politician, PM 1930, 1933-34, 1937-38; Vice PM of Vichy Government 1940. Elected Mayor of Tours 1912, Radical Deputy 1919. Served in 1924-26 center-left coalition governments, briefly Council President 1930. Joined governing coalition 1932-34 as Interior Minister, PM Nov. 1933-Jan. 1934, resigned over “Stavisky Affair." Stavisky embezzled from Bayonne’s Crédit Municipal bank, and was linked to several Radical deputies, including a minister of Chautemps’ government. The press later revealed that Stavisky got a 19-month remit of his trial because the prosecutor was Chautemps' brother-in-law. On Jan. 8 1934, Stavisky was found dead, a suicide according to the police, which caused general disbelief. The right wing believed Chautemps had him assassinated to keep him from revealing secrets. The press began a campaign against government corruption, and at the end of January, after revelation of another scandal, Chautemps resigned, succeeded by Daladier. Minister of State in Blum’s 1936 Popular Front government, PM June 1937-March 1938. Pursuing the Popular Front’s program, he nationalized the railroads and created the SNCF. He resigned and served as VP of the Council under Daladier and Reynaud April 1938-1940. On the fall of France he was one of those urging an armistice. Vice PM under Petain but after a few weeks came to the US on a mission and did not come back. He returned to French No. Africa in 1944. In 1947 he was tried and convicted in absentia for collaboration with the Vichy regime, his sentence voided by the statute of limitations in 1954. Burgoyne Phila. Not dated but likely early 1940s sent while in the US.
