(1923-2016) Polish-born 9th President of the State of Israel, twice Prime Minister, once Interim PM, member of 12 cabinets in a 66+ year political career. Elected to the Knesset Nov. 1959 and, except for a 3-month hiatus in early 2006, served continuously until 2007, when he became President, retiring 2014. During his career, he represented 5 political parties in the Knesset. Peres won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat for the peace talks he participated in as Foreign Minister, producing the Oslo Accords. He is the 1st former PM elected President of Israel. In 1947, Peres joined the Haganah, and Ben-Gurion made him responsible for personnel and arms purchases. In 1952, he was appointed Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Defense, and in 1953 became Director-General at 29. He was instrumental in establishing close relations with France, securing massive amounts of quality arms, including the advanced Dassault Mirage III jet fighter, that helped tip the balance of power in the region. He was instrumental in establishing the Dimona nuclear reactor, and entered into a tri-national agreement with France and the UK, positioning Israel in the 1956 Suez Crisis.
