Description: (1900-1983) Egyptian Army Sudanese branch officer, Chairman of Supreme Council of Sudanís Armed Forces 1958-64 after 1956 independence. Overthrew civilian government November 1958, and installed himself as presiding officer of a military government. Charted course of neutrality in foreign affairs, of agricultural diversification and industrialization. The failure of his economic program coupled with his policy of "Islamization" of the non-Muslim South created near civil war and led to his 1964 resignation and the restoration of civilian government.
