(1822-1903) American industrialist and politician, chairman of the Democratic National Committee 1876-77, NY US Rep 1875-79 & 1881-86, NYC Mayor 1887-88 (defeating Theodore Roosevelt), helped overthrow Tweed Ring. His most famous speech was made at the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883. Son-in-law of Peter Cooper, aided him in founding Cooper Union 1859, planned financing and construction of the 1st NYC subway line, for which he is considered the "Father of the New York City Subway System". With brother-in-law Edward Cooper (son of Peter Cooper) formed Cooper, Hewitt & Co. iron manufacturing business 1845, introduced 1st US open-hearth furnace 1862 & made 1st American structural iron beams in 1870. Signed card dated March 4 1901, with small magazine portrait.
