Price: $150.00

Description:
(“Gordo”, 1927-2004) One of the 7 original Project Mercury US astronauts, 1st US manned-space effort. Flew longest flight of Mercury project, 1st American to sleep in orbit, last American to launch alone into Earth orbit and conduct entire solo orbital mission. Served in USMC, Army, and Air Force. Assigned to Experimental Flight Test School at Edwards AFB in California, with Flight Test Engineering Division as test pilot and project manager, testing F-102A and F-106B. Was capsule communicator (CAPCOM) for Alan Shepard's 1st sub-orbital spaceflight in Freedom 7 & Scott Carpenter's Aurora 7 flight, backup pilot for Wally Schirra in Sigma 7. Launched into space May 15 1963 aboard Mercury-Atlas 9 "Faith 7" spacecraft, last Mercury mission. Orbited Earth 22 times, logged more time in space than all 5 previous Mercury astronauts combined. First US astronaut to sleep not only in orbit but on the launch pad during countdown. Towards end of Faith 7 flight there were mission-threatening technical problems. Cooper's cool-headed performance and piloting skills led to basic rethinking of design philosophy for later space missions. On 8/21/65, he flew as command pilot of Gemini 5 on an 8-day, 120-orbit mission with Pete Conrad. They set new space endurance record showing astronauts could survive in space for the length of time necessary to go from Earth to the Moon and back. He was 1st astronaut to make a 2nd orbital flight and was backup command pilot for Gemini 12. Apollo 10 backup commander, sought assignment as commander of Apollo 13. After falling-out with NASA management, retired from NASA and the Air Force 7/31/70. During the 70s, worked for The Walt Disney Company as a VP of research and development for Epcot.
