(b. 1930) USMA 1951, joined Air Force and flew F86 Sabre Jets in 66 combat missions in Korea. Selected by NASA in 1963 into the 3rd group of astronauts. Docking and rendezvous techniques he devised for spacecraft in Earth and lunar orbit became critical to the success of the Gemini and Apollo programs, and are still used today. Pioneered underwater training techniques to simulate spacewalking. In 1966 on Gemini 12 orbital mission, performed 1st successful spacewalk, setting a new EVA record of 5 hours. On July 20, 1969, with Neil Armstrong made historic Apollo 11 moonwalk, first 2 humans to set foot on another world. They spent 21 hours on the lunar surface and returned with 46 lbs. of moon rocks. Awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom. Signed light green 4 1/2 x 5 1/2 autograph album leaf, in person signature.
