Price: $95.00 Special Offer - $80.00

Description:
(1930-2016) Navy pilot, aeronautical engineer, ufologist, 6th astronaut moonwalker. Selected in 1966 as part of NASA's 5th astronaut group, assigned to Apollo 9 support crew, then designated Apollo 10 backup Lunar Module Pilot. This placed him in rotation for Apollo 13, but his crew was switched to Apollo 14 so that Commander Alan Shepard, grounded by a medical problem since the Gemini program, could train longer. During the Apollo 13 crisis, Mitchell worked in an Apollo simulator to help bring the crew back and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1970. He was Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 14, landing with Shepard aboard Lunar Module "Antares" in 1971. They stayed on the Moon for 33 hours, deployed and activated scientific equipment and experiments, and collected almost 100lbs. of lunar samples. Other Apollo 14 achievements include: only use of the Mobile Equipment Transporter (MET); 1st successful use of color TV with a new Vidicon tube; longest distance traversed on foot on the lunar surface; largest payload placed in lunar orbit; 1st use of shortened lunar orbit rendezvous techniques; 1st extensive orbital science period conducted during CSM solo operations. He was subsequently designated to serve as backup Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 16. In 1972, he retired from NASA and the Navy. Mitchell's interests included consciousness and paranormal phenomena. On his return to Earth during Apollo 14 he claimed to have conducted private ESP experiments with friends on Earth. He founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS)) for consciousness research and other "related phenomena." He believed in remote healing and publicly opined support for existence of UFOs and in alien contacts and government cover-ups of their existence. 3 3/4 x 6 1/2 Apollo 14 Splashdown Cover, envelope with blue rubber stamp Apollo 14 cachet, signed by Mitchell at top. Postmarked Titusville, Fla., February 9 1971.
