(1926-2009) USSR cosmonaut and eminent space enginee. The Feoktistov crater on the far side of the Moon is named in his honor. Fought German at 16, captured, wounded, escaped to Soviet lines. Graduate engineer 1949, later earned doctorate in physics. In 1955, he joined the team that would design Sputnik satellites, and Vostok, Voskhod and Soyuz space capsules under the leadership of Soviet Chief Designer Sergei Korolev. Feoktistov also worked on a design for an ion-propelled spacecraft capable of taking humans to Mars. In 1964, he was selected as part of a group of engineers for cosmonaut training and in October was hastily assigned to the multi-disciplinary Voshkod 1 crew, 1st civilian to make a space flight, and only Soviet cosmonaut not a member of the Communist Party. During his space flight, he spent just over 24h17m in space. After Voskhod 1, Feoktistov's training for further space flight was discontinued for medical reasons. However, he continued outer space engineering work, and he later became the head of the Soviet space design bureau that designed the Salyut and Mir space stations. He was deputy head of the mission control center at Baikonur. In October 1969, Feoktistov and Georgi Beregovoi traveled as guests of NASA throughout the US, joined US astronauts as hosts, inc. Gene Cernan and Neil Armstrong. Feoktistov resigned from his engineering position with Energiaand and returned to Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School as a professor in 1990.
