(1867-1941) Jewish-American businessman, philanthropist, and US Senator, son of Meyer and Barbara Guggenheim, younger brother of Daniel and Solomon R.. Guggenheim. Born and educated in Philadelphia, moved to Pueblo, Colorado to work for his father's mining and smelting operation, M. Guggenheim's Sons., He moved to Denver in 1892 and married Olga Hirsh in 1898 at the Waldorf Astoria New York; to celebrate the marriage, the Guggenheims provided Thanksgiving dinner to 5,000 poor Manhattan children. Simon & Olga resided in Denver and celebrated the birth of their 1st child, John, in 1905. To commemorate the event, Guggenheim donated $80,000 ($2.2M in 2017) to the Colorado School of Mines to build Guggenheim Hall, then the largest private grant ever made to a state institution. When, in 1907, their 2nd son George was born, he donated a law building in 1909 for the University of Colorado. Imbued with the family sense of social responsibility, he was a generous benefactor of many educational and medical institutions In 1907, Guggenheim was elected to the US Senate (R), serving 1907-13. While in Congress, older brother Benjamin died on the RMS Titanic. After his term expired, Guggenheim moved to New York and joined the board of American Smelting and Refining Co. (The company merged with the Philadelphia Smelting and Refining Company in 1901), later board chairman, president 1919-41. In 1922, his son John died of mastoiditis before leaving for college. In his memory, Guggenheim and his wife established the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1925. Seeded with $3M ($41.9M in 2017); the Foundation offered 50 fellowships in its 1st year for international study. Since then, the Foundation has granted 15,000+ Guggenheim Fellowships, worth almost a quarter of a billion dollars. 2 x 6 3/4 signed portion of album page adding "Colorado" under his signature, signed likely while US Senator (1907-13).
