Price: $50.00

Description:
James Walker (1794-1874) Unitarian minister, religious philosopher, 21st President of Harvard University 1853-60. Graduated Harvard 1814, taught a year at Phillips Exeter Academy, returned to Harvard Divinity School (A.M. 1817). Spent the next 20 years as a Unitarian minister for Harvard Church in Charlestown, Mass. A well respected preacher, Walker became a leader in the Unitarian movement, helping organize the American Unitarian Association (1825), contributing to American Unitarian Tracts, and editing the Unitarian journal, “the Christian Examiner”, 1831-39. His most important work was “The Philosophy of Man's Spiritual Nature in Regard to the Foundation of Faith” (1834), a combination of several philosophical arguments supporting the existence of God. Walker was a Harvard Fellow 1834-53, member of the Board of Overseers 1825-36 & 1864-74, and Alford Professor of Natural Religion, Moral Philosophy, and Civil Polity 1838-53. He also acted as college preacher, speaking in the college chapel. In 1853, Walker was elected President of Harvard University, his administration uneventful, instituting no great reforms. Only new subject added to the course curriculum was music; evening prayers were discontinued in 1855, the Appleton Chapel completed in 1858, and Boylston Hall built in 1857. After retiring he spent his time writing, lecturing, and preaching, studying philosophy and literature, and speaking in support of the Union cause. At his death, he left his books and the bulk of his estate, $15,000, to the Harvard College Library. SP, 11 x 7 ¾ albumen print photograph, bust portrait from left profile, mounted on card, signed on mount below image.
