(1867-1955)USMA 1892, fought in the Spanish-American War and during the Boxer Rebellion in China. Army Brigadier General 1919, Major General 1920. With AEF in France 1917-19, led 1st Division July-Oct. 1918, later 5th Corps in the Cantigny, Soissons, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne operations in 1918. He later commanded IX and IV Corps and served on the American Peace Commission at the 1919 Versailles Peace Conference. He was admired by many as a gifted leader with great personal integrity. As Army Chief of Staff 1926-30, he directed the formation of a mechanized force and recommended an integrated mobile force of tank, artillery, engineer and quartermaster elements. Promoted to General 1929, retired 1931. President of The Citadel 1931-53, the elite drill team, The Summerall Guards, and Summerall chapel are named for him there. Signed 2 ¼ x 3 ¼ printed “Autograph” card as General and (Army) Chief of Staff.
