(1794-1865) Ohio Whig, US Rep 1831-40 & 1859-61, Governor 1840-42, US Senator 1845-50, Secretary of the Treasury (Fillmore) 1850-53. Corwin believed in a protective tariff, but was unsuccessful in passing any tariff legislation in a Congress controlled by Democrats. As Lincoln’s Minister to Mexico 1861-64, he was well remembered for opposing the Mexican-American War while in the Senate and helped keep good relations with Mexico during the Civil War despite Confederate efforts to sway their allegiances. LS as Treasury Secretary on 10 x 8 blue paper, Treasury Department (Washington, DC), May 22 18512, to H. F. Tallmadge, US Marshal for the Southern District of New York. Secretary Corwin returns a letter and enclosure, referring the matter to the Secretary of the Interior "who is charged by law with the supervision of claims of that character."
