(B. Anne Frances Robbins, 1921-2016) film actress, 2nd wife of Ronald Reagan, First Lady 1981-89. When her mother remarried in 1929, she moved to Chicago and took the name Davis from her stepfather. As Nancy Davis, she was a Hollywood actress in the 1940s & 50s, starring in films such as "The Next Voice You Hear...", and "Donovan's Brain”. In 1952, she married Screen Actors Guild president Ronald Reagan and had 2 children with him. They starred together in "Hellcats of the Navy" in 1957. As First Lady of California 1967-75, she worked with the Foster Grandparents Program. She restored a Kennedyesque glamour to the White House and championed recreational drug prevention causes, founding the "Just Say No" campaign, considered her major initiative as First Lady. She generally had a strong influence on her husband and played a role in a few of his personnel and diplomatic decisions. After the Reagans left the White House in 1989, they retired to their Bel Air, California home. Nancy devoted most of her time to caring for her husband, diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease in 1994, until his death in 2004. She remained active within the Reagan Library and in politics, particularly in support of embryonic stem cell research until her death. TLS on her personal 10 1/2 x 7 1/4 “Mrs. Ronald Reagan/Pacific Palisades” letterhead, July 24 1980 (a week after Ronald Reagan accepted the 1980 GOP presidential nomination), to Ed King, an early Maryland political supporter of her husband’s. She was pleased to receive his recent letter, is glad he enjoyed reading “Nancy”, and thanks him for his good wishes and words of encouragement. “Nancy” was co-written with Bill Libby and published in 1980.
