Black-printed engraved invitation from Mrs. Nixon to a Christmas Open House at The White House at 3pm, December 16, 1970. Gilt presidential seal at top center. On a cold and rainy Dec. 16, 1970, President Nixon lit the 78 foot spruce from the Black Hills of South Dakota. He chose a young boy from the audience to help him light the 6,000 blue, green, and yellow bulbs. Unlike the 1969 ceremony, there were no shouts and chants coming from anti-war protestors. The President told the American people in his annual Christmas greeting that, “We can look forward with assurance to the end of the war.”
