(1918-2004) Commanded US Army Pacific Oct. 1970-Jan. 1973. Commissioned through ROTC 1940, saw combat in WW II, earning the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's 2nd highest decoration for valor on Anzio Beachhead in Italy. He also fought in North Africa, Sicily, France, and Germany. After retirement from the military he earned a Master of Letters degree in International Relations from New College, Oxford University. His military schooling included the US Army War College and the National War College. His major Vietnam War commands included Commanding General for Task Force Oregon (Provisional), Commanding General for I Field Force, and Commanding General, Provisional Corps, for USMACV, later MACV Deputy Commander. He ended his career as Commander in Chief, US Southern Command in the Panama Canal Zone. Additional assignments include serving in Eisenhower's NATO HQ in Paris, and duty with the French Forces in Vietnam in 1954. Because of this experience, he was valuable to General Westmoreland as MACV Chief of Staff. Rosson also was Director of the Plans and Policy Directorate, J5, for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. TLS on 8 Ĺ x 6 New College, Oxford letterhead as General, US Army (Ret.), February 18 1979, to Col. Donald P. Shaw, Director, US Army Military History Institute, Carlisle Barrracks, Penna. As he is at Oxford, Rosson notes his unavailability for interviews for the Oral History Project thru 1979 but hopes they can revisit the invitation upon Rossonís return to the US after his Oxford work is over. COL. DONALD P.
