(1840-1917) New York lawyer, US Attorney General 1889-93. After graduation from Hamilton College in 1861, he studied law in the office of Chief Justice Morrison Waite and was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1865. For many years, and particularly during the 1888 campaign, he was a confidential advisor to Benjamin Harrison who appointed him as US Attorney General. 2 x 3 ¼ card signed as Attorney General, adds March 23 1891 date.
