(1915-1996) Theater, film and TV actress, her 30+-year career saw primarily playing roles older than she was. She received an Oscar and a Tony Award. Van Fleet established herself as a notable dramatic actress on Broadway over several years, beginning in 1946 in “The Winter’s Tale” and in “King Lear” (1950). She won the 1954 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in “The Trip to Bountiful” with Lillian Gish and Eva Marie Saint. Director Elia Kazan brought her to Hollywood after who had directed her on stage in 1952 and 1953. He cast her in his film adaptation of Steinbeck’s “East of Eden”, her film debut, for which she won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for playing James Dean’s mother. Her subsequent film work was steady through 1960, and included “The Rose Tattoo” (1955), “I’ll Cry Tomorrow” (1955), “The King and Four Queens” (1956), and “Gunfight at the O. K. Corral” (1957). However, her career did not progress as she had hoped. In 1958, she was nominated for a Tony for Best Actress in a Play for “Look Homeward, Angel” with Anthony Perkins. Her later films included “Wild River” (1960) playing an 89-year-old matriarch while only 46. Other notable roles include the Wicked Stepmother in “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” (1965), Paul Newman’s mother in “Cool Hand Luke” (1967), and the mother in “I Love You, Alice B. Toklas” (1968). Her TV work included appearances on “Naked City”, “Thriller”, “Bonanza”, “The wild, Wild West”, and “Police Woman”. Among her most emotionally charged TV dramatic performances was as the explosive Mrs. Shrike in the 1956 episode "Shopping for Death" on “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”. 10 x 8 ISP, b&w glossy MGM publicity bust portrait inscribed with sentiment and signed.
