Description:
(1901-1970) Irish-American theater, radio, film, and television actor.. After he dropped out of school as a fifth-grader, he ran away from home several times, going to work for carnivals, fairs, and small circuses, later served in the US Navy. He began his career on Broadway and radio in his teens. He appeared in the hit musical “Going Up” on Broadway in 1917 and in London in 1918. He later acted on the radio show “The Fat Man”. Other radio work included “Stroke of Fate” and as Charlie Chan among other roles. He also starred in the 1950s radio program “Richard Diamond, Private Detective”. In the late 1940s, he began appearing regularly in supporting film roles. In the 1952–53 TV season, he co-starred in the CBS sitcom “Leave It to Larry”. In 1954 Begley appeared on “Robert Montgomery Presents”. He won a 1962 Best Supporting Actor Oscar for “Sweet Bird of Youth”. Some other notable films of his include “Deadline-U.S.A.” (1952),“Twelve Angry Men” (1957), “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” (1964), and “Wild in the Streets” (1968). A notable role Begley played on TV (twice in 1955) and on screen (1956) is William (Bill) Briggs, one of 3 main characters in Rod Serling’s “Patterns”. In 1956, he appeared on Broadway in “Inherit the Wind” and won a Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Play. 1968 he appeared with Clint Eastwood in the classic western, “Hang 'Em High”. Other TV work included appearances on “The Virginian”, “Bonanza”, “The Fugitive”, “The Dick Van Dyke Show”, “The Wild, Wild West”, and “Wagon Train”. Later Broadway credits include “All My Sons” and “Our Town”. He is the father of actor Ed Begley Jr. ISP, 10 x 8 b&w glossy still bust portrait from United Artist’s 1956 film, “Patterns”, seated and smiling with pipe in his mouth; signed and inscribed with sentiment at top left.
