Description:
(1882-1945) 1920 Democratic VP candidate, contracted infantile paralysis August 1921. Member of Roosevelt and O’Connor law firm 1924, New York Governor 1929-33, President of the US 1933-45, one of America’s greatest presidents. TLS on 10 ½ x 8 blue-imprinted “The White House/Washington” letterhead, December 19 1933, 9 months into his presidency, to Miss Innes Holt Shafer, Richmond, Va. FDR has received her interesting letter on establishing a Children’s and Veterans’ Health Resort near Christiansburg, Va. While meritorious, he regrets he cannot offer federal funds as he recently approved $1.350M to build a Veterans’ Hospital at Roanoke, Va., and 2 similar enterprises in close proximity can’t be justified. He suggests that on its merits, this project might be considered by the Public Works Administration through cooperation with a state or local body, and returns photographs she sent. INNES HOLT SHAFER (1881-1965) received a 1926 patent for a children’s money receptacle. The Roanoke Veterans Administration Hospital Historic District encompasses 34 buildings. Construction began on the Roanoke (now Salem) VA Hospital in 1934, and various additions were constructed through 1950. The buildings are in the Colonial Revival and Classical Revival architectural styles nationally popular at the time. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
