(1822-1911) Nephew of Erasmus Darwin, traveler in Europe, Asia Minor, Holy Land and southwest Africa, never holding scientific or teaching positions. Studies weather and published "Meteorographica" in 1863, basis for modern weather maps. Best known for his study of anthropology and study of heredtity, and considered the founder of science of eugenics. He developed system of fingerprint identification. Published "Hereditary Genius" 1869, "Inquiries into Human Faculty" 1883, "Natural Inheritance" 1889, and "Finger Prints" 1893. 3 x 5 ANS "F. Galton" on a card mounted on 5 x 5 ˝ thin card, 42 Rutland Gate (London), Feb. 22, 1888, to a publisher. Galton hopes he will send a copy of a published pamphlet on Galton, noting that “there is nothing that I recollect in my letter that you might not publish…”
